Who R U?
Yep, I feel like IR (Infrared) Ed this week. I’ve been bringing my IR-converted Canon Rebel XT along with my Canon 50mm f/1.8 ($99 special) lens with me to work each day this week. The IR camera is a particularly good choice for my lunchtime walks because IR can tend to look better with harsh midday sunlight.
Heck, today I even brought along the Lensbaby so I could try some selective focus infrared photography. I am always looking to try new things. Sometimes they don’t quite work out the first time but I learn from my trials and errors and things look much better the second time around.
These images are representative of just such a case. I went out Monday at Noon and made a series of images which all, how shall I say this, STUNK!! But I did realize what I did wrong and went back out Tuesday, again at Noon, to correct my mistake and re-shoot the images. Here are two examples of the images from that shoot. Each was processed slightly differently to give the overall effect that I wanted.
The first image is simply entitled “Willows”.
And the second is “Untitled IR – 040610″.
Today, I shot IR with the Lensbaby. The images were OK, even good but not exactly what I was hoping for. So tomorrow I will head out and try, try again!

I really like Willows – it’s dreamy!!
The Willows look great, it’s soft and dreamy as from a fairy tale. I really like also the second image – it is great to see a different IR photo than a landscape with trees. The structures and details in the image are wonderful and I like how the top half of the image looks like a cave with stalactites. Go on, Ed, and shows us some more. Carry on in your experiments.
Hi Ed,
The first one is awesome.. Wow you got right to get this IR set-up… The willows are almost coming out of a very tale!!
The IR really brings out the texture in the second one.
Love the Willows! It’s dreamy and has just the right amount of foliage to make this image work so well.
These are fantastic photos! I am in awe …jaw-dropping awe!
Both fine images, but the willows stands out – impressionistic and graceful.
I generally don’t like IR photos, but these are the exception. They are really nice. I like the softness of the first image–suits the subject perfectly. The second image has detail and patterns and great toning. Very nice work.
These are pretty cool Ed. I really like the willows. I like a square crop of that image that cuts out the sky completely – scroll the screen to crop it out and see if you like it also.
Gorgeous IR captures! Wow! I really like them both, and that willows is awesome in an impressionistic look. In time I’ll get my Rebel XTi IR converted; meanwhile, I am going to play with an IR lenses. I do love IR photos!
