Just about when you are ready to give up…

1001_MotionBlurTreesLakeTowhee_010-Edit-Edit

Cold (17F), blustery (20-30 mph winds) but we decided to go out this morning anyway. Admittedly most of the morning was spent in the car driving from site to site looking for birds for my wife (we found the albino hawk she wanted to see) and anything for me to shoot. After two hours, I hadn’t even taken my camera out of the bag when I mentioned to my wife that I hadn’t seen a single thing that I had wanted to shoot. Not a minute later, we rounded a curve in a local county park and there it was… a most interesting (at least to me) stand of trees, cypress maybe, I don’t know for sure.

I pulled over, got out the camera and made several images. This is one that I like.

Image made with Canon 50D and 24-70 2.8L lens, handheld

0.8 sec @ f/22; ISO 100; 0 EV; FL 55mm

Image processed in Nik Dfine, Viveza 2, and Color Efex (Polarization and Lighten Center filters).

  • I like that one a lot! It really stimulates my imagination too.

  • This is one I like too. Amazing what lurks around that last corner…

  • A great lesson to never give up as you never know what is just around the corner. I really like the composition. The light green foliage in the middle really draws me into the scene…very nicely done.

  • Ed… I think that snow can really have a positive impact on these type of images. I am assuming that is snow on the ground? Nice earthy tones in this one.

  • Looks like clouds floating – it’s mystifying… beautifully done!

  • I like this one after looking at it for a while. I think that the composition and colours are the things of interest for me here. I like the further line of trees and how eyes of a watcher are directed to the central part bordered by those 2 closer trees and between these you find a the only green trees in the image, others are brown. I like this and would like even more if it would be more symmetric – those 2 closer trees centralised. I’m glad you got your shot today ;)

  • Excellent! I guess your patience paid off. The effect are sumptuous..

  • Looks like it was sooo cold you couldn’t stop shaking the camera!
    Great image!

  • My favorite of all your motion blurs so far.

  • First thing crossing my mind is fog just above the ground level…floating just inches above grave sites. I could imagine dead spirits, zombies like in Michael Jackson’s Thriller walking about. Cypress trees are abundant in Kansas cemeteries.

  • Ed, this has just the right amount of detail. I love the scene and the contrasts. Your motion is wonderful. Maybe I’m being really picky here, but with this kind of shot, I also look at the edges. You have space on the right and none on the left. I would prefer to see similar ’space’ on both sides of the frame and not have a tree trunk blocked up against the frame (for a dominant trunk that is) That’s just me……. nevertheless, this is an outstanding motion pan!

  • Outstanding. Somehow it looks as if the scene is flooded. I assume that’s snow that created this fantastic blur. I could look at this image for hours.

  • An excellent and attractive motion blur – the foreground gives it a surreal look.

  • Fantastic image Ed, I love the implied motion and soft feel, don’t love it when an opportunity just appears like that !!
